Name: HAFKIN, SARAH
Initials: S
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Stewardess
Regiment/Service: Mercantile Marine
Unit Text: Stdess. Sarah. S.S. "Saidieh" (London)
Date of Death: 01/06/1915
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL

Sarah died aged 52 when she was thrown overboard during the sinking of the Saidieh - The Times of 3rd Jun 1915 states that her body was landed at Chatham - is there anyone in the Chatham area that could find out where she is buried - Medway council are another local authority that want you to put your hand in your pocket to the tune of £10 before doing a check - I have emailed & hope they show some discretion in this case

Chris

Chris,

I wrote to Miss S.A Trevorant in the Medway Council some time ago and haven't heard from them! I shall chase it up and get back to you. Another poor performing L.A which won't do anything unless it's paid something. They don't provide services to the local people who pay their wages anymore, everything must pay for itself and generate revenue. I'm just about fed up with this kind of treatment of all our poor non-coms.  sad.gif

These people sicken me. They are no longer satisfied being our servants - they want to be our masters now (and are being allowed to suceed in this aim).

If I were to make an educated guess where this casualty is buried I would say - Woodlands Cemetery, Gillingham alongside the large Royal Navy plots.

Neil

I would probably go with that one - however having checked the census we may have to look at the possibility of her body being returned to  East London for burial
