This is slightly off-topic as all the graves in Milan are Second World War, but there is a strong possibility I will be visiting this cemetery tomorrow and I wondered if anyone wanted any pictures taken?

Thanks Peter for telling me about this.

We need everyone listed here.

MILAN WAR CEMETERY

Take the tangenziale west, skirting Milan, from the autostradas A1, A4 or A7. Exit from the tangenziale (main road) following the blue signs for Milano, route SS11. Proceed in the direction of Milano and pass the Grand Hotel Brun. Take the sharp turn to the left following the CWGC signs. The cemetery lies in a large park approximately 0.5 kilometre along on the right. From the city centre head west following signs for the San Siro football Stadium. The road which runs past the stadium has local authority signs for Milan War Cemetery. On 3 September 1943 the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, the invasion coinciding with an armistice made with the Italians who then re-entered the war on the Allied side. The Allied advance was stalled for two successive winters: in 1943 on the German defensive position known as the Gustav Line, stretching from the river Gargliano in the west to the Sangro in the east, and in 1944 on the Gothic Line in the northern Appenine mountains. At the beginning of April 1945, the Allies launched their final offensive against the German positions spread out in a line across Italy, south of Bologna. German resistance was by now beginning to disintegrate and the Allies were able to fan out rapidly across the Po valley. Milan, already freed by Italian Partisans, was entered by the US 4th Corps on 2 May 1945, the day of the German surrender in Italy. As Milan fell to the Allies largely without a fight, the Commonwealth forces suffered few casualties. Most of the graves in Milan War Cemetery were those of prisoners-of-war or airmen and were brought in from the surrounding towns and villages - places such as Bergamo, Boves, Carpi, Cicagna, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Turin and Val d'Isere - after the war. Milan War Cemetery contains 417 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 27 of them unidentified. There are also six war graves of other nationalities.

Well everyone, I couldn't get the pictures because grass seed had recently been sewn - there was a tape across the entrance and signs saying not to go onto the grass... (check the photo below) sad.gif

I will probably be back at some point in the future, and if this happens I will try and get the photos then.

Oh, I'm sorry of this!
Anyway as I said I live in Milano, I'll go there in a few weeks (that should be enough for the grass!) and try to take those photos!

Sorry, no luck yet! mad.gif
I went there this morning, but signs are still there!
The problem is that it's impossible to go anywhere without walking on the lawn, as the path arrives just to the Cross of Sacrifice, goes around it and no further...
Well, I'll try again in some time! After all it's less than 5 Kms from my home. I only hope they won't simply forget the signs there (that is quite usual here in Italy...).

Well, at last the cemetery has reopened!
I went there and took all the photos...
I'll contact those who asked them to know where to send them (you can PM me if you read this message first!).
Unfortunately I'll have to re-shoot a few, as due to the sun position they are practically unreadable...
But I'd have to go to the cemetery again anyway, as I still have to take the photo for the 360 panoramic for Yvan, so that's not a problem (and if anyone wants any other photos, there are still few days to ask for them!)

A nice note: my daughter (9 y.o.) came with me and helped me to keep note of names...She said it was a sort of treasure hunt and decided she will come next time too.
She was very impressed at how well-kept the cemetery was, and remarked "It is very clean and tidy. If it were an exercise book, it would get "excellent"". biggrin.gif

Gosh, I hope I'm not too late!

We have two of our casualties there - they are:

Sergeant Hughie William Carter, RAF, died 27 August 1940, grave I A 10

and

Lance Corporal George Alexander Whaley, Worcestershires, died 31 December 1942, grave ref III A 2

If there is any chance of photos of their graves (and maybe a general view also of the area they are in?) it would be wonderful.

Thank you ever so much :-)

Also ... how nice your daughter joins in. Perhaps she should get a gold star, and "excellent" too!

My three are rather older, but they still like to come to help find graves (boyfriends in tow), and one of them and her friend laid our wreath at the Menin Gate in December too. It's super our newer people take such interest.

You are not too late! Actually I've already been there twice; I went there in the weekend to take a panoramic for Yvan (for TodayIsfree.com site ) and to re-take some photos that weren't good. But as I was without my daughter (I'm separated and last weekend my children were with their father) , I had to keep note by myself and I managed to forget three photos: I marked them as "done", but they weren't on the camera... blink.gif .
So I'll have to go back yet another time to finish the work (and I have half an idea of taking photos of all the graves and put them on Findagrave, where there are already entries for all the graves of Milan's War cemetery! After all I've already shot more than 60 and the cemetery is not very big)
Next time then I'll take yours too!

Elena

Thank you very much for the photos you sent - they are great, and I am very grateful. They are now online with our Dover Virtual Memorial. It's lovely that our casualties' graves have been visited again, too.

It was very kind of you. Thank you. smile.gif

Spidge,

I am resarching Alexander Barr Hart - one of the names you asked Elana to photograph for you in 2008. She has generously sent me the photo but suggested that you may have some more information. I have information from the Australian achieves and they released some more information a few days ago after I made application for release of extra files. In particular I am trying to find where he and his crew were originally buried. Apparently according to a 1947 letter of investigation, Hart was one of 11 airmen buried in a civil cemetery in Limoto, and after identification they remains were re-buried in Milan.

Can you you assist me ?

Bill.
