My friend has sent me this picture of the memorial to 1st Madras Pioneers at Bangalore.

Now my problem is that I cannot find any information on them, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Mick

According to Donovan Jackson's "India's Army" this unit was formed during the 1922 reorganisation of the Indian Army.

The 1st Bn, 1st Madras Pioneers (King George's Own) was formed from 1st Bn, 61st King George's Own Pioneers (the 2nd Bn of the 61st disappeared in 1922).

The 2nd Bn, 1st Madras Pioneers was formed from the 64th Pioneers.

The Battle Honours shown in the image can now be related to the Great War campaigns that the 61st and 64th Pioneers served in.
