Complimentary to IFTC I will attempting to find as many graves as possible that are listed on the Brookwood Memorial as possible

If any pal with access to local newspaper archives can offer to help that would be a great help

For Terry Denham when new names come in for Brookwood on your In From The Cold announcements I would be grateful for a place of death if possible

If anyone is able to offer any help this would be appreciated

Also if you believe that you have found a grave relating to any other of the memorials to the missing please get in touch

Sorry to be pedantic - not the Brookwood Memorial. That is another memorial for WW2 names.

It is the Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial - a mouthful, I know, but accurately describes the names thereon. Often shortened to 'Brookwood UK 14-18'.
Terry Denham
I'll PM you with the locations known from recent IFCP acceptances.

It looks like we have had our first success with this project

Just as a reminder whilst the main effort will be on the Brookwood 1914- 18 UK Memorial I will also have a look at any case that crops up from the Holybrook Memorial or the 3 Naval Memorials

Good job Chris well done. Out of interest what process are you following to get the place of comemoration changed once the burial site has been established & do you know if CWGC headstones are going to be requested for the unmarked graves?
Terry Denham
Will

Chris' successes are passed to me and they are progressed through the GWF process.

If no suitable private memorial already exists, CWGC will always seek permission to erect an official stone.
Terry Denham
Chris

Your first one is 'home'.

ALDERSON's grave in Rochdale Cemetery has been confirmed and CWGC has amended its database. A headstone will be erected in due course.

Well done.

The latest update as of 14th August 2009

40 graves now found subject to approval by CWGC
brucehubbard
It is great that 40 have now been found, but how many were there to start with?
I presume that all the panels will have to be replaced, or, if you are successful in finding evry one in the memorial, it could be taken away altogether!

The Brookwood 1914-18 memorial will never be redundant as several of the casualties were lost at sea - in the case of one of the Canadians he was cremated & his ashes were given to his wife.

Total on the memorial at present is 363.

The problem im meeting is the very high charges some local authorities charge for searches - in one case £30 per name.

One very good result was Southampton Old Cemetery were not only did I find the man I was looking for, but also found a non commemorated airman.

Chris
chrisharley9
This weeks update - graves found from the Brookwood 1914-18 Memorial now stands at 47.

Also have found the grave of one of those listed on the Thepival Memorial

Now I knew this was going to happen - the number of successes will now fall off into single figures per week

Reasons:

A large number of the casualties are from the London area - Im at a loss sometimes where to start with the London cemeteries so I dont have a clue which cemetery served what area. If there is anyone knowledgeable about a certain area of London who is prepared to have a look at my info & suggest places to look I would love to hear from you. I even prepared to travel down to London to meet up with anyone prepared to help. I can even push the boat for a pie & a pint.

A large number of my enquiries have met with an astonishing wall of silence - not even an acknowledgment
