Terry,

Any news on the two known burials that I forwarded to you (1 x WW1 MN and 1 x WW2 RAF).

Cheers.

Andy.

If only other councils were so helpful

Chris

Andy

No news yet.

They are in hand. The physical inspections have to be fitted in with other scheduled visits and then the legal stuff relating to permissions for headstone erection can take a loooong time.

I will email you when there is news.

Chris,

Maggie Stephenson-Knight would be very interested in this development, why not email her? She's a friend of mine and a good sort....

Thank you!

A good friend and all-round super lady has a little site about the Maloja - here

www.ssmaloja.co.uk

I hope this helps. As well as the press reports, there are a few more Dover burials mentioned, and pictures of headstones.

A superb little website by Joyce Banks.

It will be interesting to see if either of these casualties has an actual headstone in Dover? If not, then I presume their names will eventually be taken off the Tower Memorial and new headstones erected? biggrin.gif

Chris,
I'm sure between us all we should be able to confirm where exactly they are buried.

This is a super find, well done. wink.gif
Neil Clark
Joyce K.A Banks has just very kindly sent me these photos which I'm sure you would like to see Chris. A Merchantile Marine casualty and a RAMC officer casualty both buried locally in Dover I think. Note the rank of the RAMC is a Surgeon (never seen that before). Email me if you want full size copies Chris. I wonder if your casualties are buried close by? -
chrisharley9
Neil

he is surgeon because he is Indian Army

Name: MAINE
Initials: W J C

Date of Death: 27/02/1916
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: L. M. 10.
Cemetery: DOVER (ST. MARY'S) NEW CEMETERY

Will report this to TD later - great photos

Chris
Terry Denham
Can't see what you are on about! wink.gif

Name: MAINE
Initials: W J C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Surgeon
Regiment/Service: Royal Army Medical Corps
Date of Death: 27/02/1916
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: L. M. 10.
Cemetery: DOVER (ST. MARY'S) NEW CEMETERY

I am checking the rank.
chrisharley9
Terry

there is some confusion here - both grave refs for Maine are the same - so is he Indian army or RAMC?

Chris
Terry Denham
Chris

There is only one entry for RAMC - check online.

Or are you complaining about speedy service? biggrin.gif

chrisharley9
Nice one Terry

How did the previous entry show him as Indian Army

Chris
Terry Denham
It's very technical but I am sure you will understand.

C**k up.
chrisharley9
And I thought that we were not at home to Mr Cock Up

Or perhaps shall I lay another place

Chris
Neil Clark
And that was as a consequence of posting a simple photograph...

Nice to see it's been corrected well done Terry. biggrin.gif

With regard to the rank, surely a Surgeon is an appointment not a rank? I have heard of a naval Surgeon Lieutenant Commander etc as a rank, but never an Army officer.
chrisharley9
I really do hate to throw this one in however the London Gazette has conclusive proof the he was an senior assistant surgeon in the Indian Army - Gazette page sent to Terry

Chris
Neil Clark

I will have a look in the Army Lists 1900,1911,1915,1917

Result - NO TRACE!
chrisharley9
Neil

no problems - have already found his MIC which confirms Indian Army

Chris
Terry Denham
We'll get there in the end!

Name: MAINE
Initials: W J C
Nationality: Indian

Grave/Memorial Reference: L. M. 10.
Cemetery: DOVER (ST. MARY'S) NEW CEMETERY

Headstone will be amended in due course.
chrisharley9
Excellent - do you want the page with his award of the MC on - nice to see that on his head stone

Chris
Terry Denham
Send it to me though amendments to Awards are not so easy at the moment.
Neil Clark
Did that really happen from my posting that pic?

REMARKABLE.

Well done Terry and Chris smile.gif
Neil Clark
Joyce Banks has very kindly sent me another photo of another Maloja victim buried in St James Cemetery, Dover -
Ponte Fractus
I've just noticed this thread so I thought I'd add to it with a picture of the Maloja in happier times.....

regards, Steve.
