Anyne else who found this fascinating ? It wasn't judgemental ... just a very effective description of some extraordinary stories.
I thought Ian Hislop's presentation was very effective.

Yes, it was fascinating, but just to be pedantic it was on Channel 4

.
Ian Hislop does these programmes superbly IMHO

Very much enjoyed it. I can't abide Ian Hislop on programmes such as 'Have I got news...' but I loved 'Not forgotten' and found him to be a great presenter, he actually seems to care! (a rarity)
Very moving programme.

I watched this programme the day after it was broadcast. I have always been impressed by the sensitive and thoughtful presentation in the "Not Forgotten" series.
Of all my family members involved in the Great War, there was one CO, the husband of one of my grandfather's cousins. I know little of his story, I believe he was an absolutist and was imprisoned for his beliefs. It is a bitter irony that his only son fought and died early in WW2.

I too found the programme to be impressive in its sensitive treatment of an area I knew very little about - and Ian Hislop continued the excellent job performed on previous episodes in the series.
I am intrigued though about the programme & the attention the Forum has given it. Perhaps these numbers will make the point:
"My Family at War" - 220 replies & 8,416 views
"Not Forgotten CH4 Nov 10th" - 3 replies & 174 views
"Not Forgotten - the men who would not fight" - 1 reply & 128 views
Unless there is a thread that I've missed - why the imbalance? Was it the reaction to the use of "celebrities" on the one hand - or an aversion to the subject matter of the other?
Personally I found both involving, thought provoking & emotional - I would be interested to hear other views from the Forum.

I enjoyed the programme immensely. It took a far braver man to object on a seriously personal credo, and to be the object of derision and hatred, often abuse and violence, than we give credit for.

Might be the screening times Brian. I've recorded Not Forgotten - not had time to watch it yet. MFAW was on quite early last week, and also more than one episode to comment on?

Brian,
perhaps it is because Hislops programmes were 'reruns' on 'freeview' channels that not everybody has? and the 'My Family at War' was showing for the first time on the Beeb?
I may be mistaken but I am sure Mr Hislops efforts were discussed at length first time around on the Forum? Just a thought?
In my humble opinion they were both very good efforts.

Scottie.

Scottie - this particular episode of Not Forgotten was being aired for the first time, I think, and was on Channel 4. So I must admit I share Brian's puzzlement over the differing reactions on the forum.
Overall, a fascinating programme on an area of the war I knew nothing about
