I thought I would post a photo of today's ceremony. A good crowd of people, young, old, and families. It is a statutory holiday so most businesses and shops are closed, which is great.

Here is a video that someone took:

LEST WE FORGET

PS. When I got home I found my dog in the bathtub shaking from the sound of the salute from the HMCS Cabot. huh.gif

Good to see the link, my grandfather Charles Leary served in the Royal Newfoundland regiment and was killed at Langemarck in 1917.

I only learnt yesterday that "Memorial University" in Newfoundland was built as a memorial to the Great War. They thought it was a better use of the money. Smart people those Newfoundlanders!

Nice to see a good turn out Ed, the weather looks as if it cooperated. I spared a moment for the Lads and Lassie buried at Earlsfield.

Cheers Rob.

Origionally founded as the Memorial Collage, the veterns thought a living memorial was a fitting tribute to their friends, the theory behind the choise was to educate the people in hopes to avoid such a war in the future. The institution moved in the early 60's to its present location where it officially became a university under Smallwood's reign. There was talk a few years ago by some staff who were in favour of droping the memorial from the official name. Needless to say that did not go over well and the notion has not been brough up since.
