Full Version: Pals group Germany?

Is there any interest in forming a group for those of us living in Germany and nearby? I know we have a few German members, but I don't have a good handle on how many expats we have living in Germany who are forum members.

I would think with the relative ease for those of us living in (the Western part at least) of Germany can get to the Western Front, that there would be some great trips/activities we could organize.

Hi Paul

I think we mentioned this idea in a previous post but it got lost on the radar somewhere. I would be really interested in any meet ups etc. I met with Fritz from the Forum a few weeks back and had a super afternoon chatting over this and that and will be meeting again in January all being well. A coordinated trip to France could also be helped along by some very nice accommodation just south of Arras I happen to know well!! wink.gif (help with the washing up the only pre-requisite).

I'm in Luxembourg. Only one and a half hours from here to Verdun and a bit further to the Argonne forest and St. Mihiel salients. I'd be happy to meet up with other Pals.

Hi Paul

At first when I saw the topic "Group for Pals in Germany, France etc." I thought - good idea; but then my second thought was that I probably live farther from the Western Front than most folk in England...

However, we are determined that we shall get back to the Battlefields next year including Verdun and very much want to get back to Koln, so it could be very interesting.

BTW we live about 100km south of Bordeaux near Mont de Marsan where there is a WW1 German cemetery with dates of death ranging from August 1914 to November 1919.

Well, it seems we at least have some interest. I was hoping some of our German pals would also pipe in, but to be honest I don't have a clear idea of how many German members we have here at the moment. Super-star forum member Egbert is away at the moment, but I know he's expressed some interest in getting together before.

I'm interested too - live in Duesseldorf

Hello...

The Loire Valley is not really a place in relation with the WWI but it's a good stop on the road to the sunny south..

Forum pals are more than welcome..

Paul, I am in! Where is the first fieldtrip, when is the first fieldtrip, ahhh I know, Christina will lead a thorough "Toter Mann" and "Hoehe 304" trip. Or was it - yes the mystic deep of the Argonnes, maybe "Bolante" or "Hubertusruecken"?

Hello Egbert,

That sounds good. Seems we have some interest and I'm sure we can arrange something for the next year. After the holidays may be a good time to start a discussion.

Pff..how can you ask such a question? This is Germany, where we take our dogs to dinner and leave our kids at home! laugh.gif

I'm in too! Watering the Argonnes, digging in Flanders or walking the Somme is fine with me.

Sounds good to me but Chester will need to be on a lead. You can't walk unleashed dogs at either Verdun or in the Argonne because of the game.

I love game! Occasionally though I put a leash on my master.
If it is not appropriate I will stay home and chase game here

I'm in the Paris area so could make most places without too much trouble, if the time is right.

I can come on most occasions, being a couple of kilometres nearer than Christina is at the moment.

I would happily lead a trip around the Bois le Pretre and the Ernst Junger trenches.

What did Chester the Famous Messenger Dog get for Christmas? Purrier the cat wants to know.

Just noticed the thread, sounds a good idea but I work in Erlangen, which is a bit far to just "up and go". I do however drive back to UK three times a year (Volvo estate car full of local liquids, he he) and if any of the trips coincide I would like to attend.

Just wanted to toch this one back to the top.

The weather has finally turned (I doubt I'll have to clean snow off my car window again like two weeks ago...)

Wanted to throw out if we'd like to do something together we had probably start making suggestions and tentative dates soon. Speaking personally, Mrs. H has already made plans for us in May and July.

Count me in but not second half of May.

My book 'Walking Verdun' is just out. I would be happy to take you all on a walk, if you like.

Just wondering how long people had in mind for this jaunt -- a week, long weekend? I might be able to get some time off in the last week of May or anytime during the last three weeks of June

cheers Martin B
