Grandson of Fritz

Hi, this is my first post.
I came across the place name Huthoulster Wald in a document that mentioned my German grandfather.
"Huthoulster" brings up nothing on Google. However I guess there must have been an anglicised or francophonic form of the name.
Does anyone know anything about this place and what occurred there?
It is mentioned alongside the place name Kemmel which leads me to believe it may relate to the time period April-May 1918. Then again this may be a red herring.
Thanks.

Hello - It is in the Ypres Salient in Flanders. The British reached the edge of the forest in late 1917, but were not able to penetrate it. Regards, Torrey

Hello Torrey,
I think Huthoulster is probably Houthulst...

Yep, Houthulst.
I can't find any connection with Kemmel though, with Houthulst north of Ypres and Kemmel south, and 30+ kilometres in between...

Just from memory : during the German Spring Offensive, concentrating on Mount Kemmel April 1918, wasn't there fighting north of Ypres as well ? Area of Merkem - Houthulst. Artillery shelling but also German troops vs. Belgian troops ?

Be ensured that HOUTHULSTER WALD is meant. And this is HOUTHULST FOREST
"Huthoulster Wald" was written mistakenly.
In April 1918 the Germans advanved from their positions in and near the forest.
Langemark and Poelkapelle were captured again. Bikschote not.
Nearly the whole salient area lost in 1917 was taken back and particulary the Germans expanded widespread over their 1915 lines.
So Zillebeke (just for example) was taken firstly.
Best wishes from Malte
