Terry, could you do a check with the CWGC please as I am not sure what is going on here
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=663628On the local memorial he is down as James Hunter, on another works memorial he is down as James on the CWGC if you do a search for Hunter S.J. you get nothing but when you put in J up he pops. His grave however has him down as Corporal S J Hunter, could you find out where the S came from please.

Kevin,
I wonder whether this is a private headstone made out in the CWGC style? That could explain the differing initials?

I agree, this does not look like IWGC/CWGC headstone but don't you figure someone who bought a private stone knew correct initials>

Well, I might 'figure' that someone who ordered a private headstone knew the initials! Even I am not that dumb....
Perhaps I should have made a lengthier post, speculating that perhaps he served with just the initial J, but his full name had the first initial S. Or that perhaps the family had a 'familiar' name for him which was not 'official' but sentimental enough to be included on the headstone. There is even the possibility that the stonemason got it wrong.
But then I 'figured' (perhaps wrongly) that it was not necessary to explain all that.

Not an official stone .
I am and always have been known as Steve M but officially I am J S M. Many people have family names as the first given name and never use it.

The stone is a perfectly standard CWGC headstone.
It is one made of granite as is common in Scotland and in some other parts of the world. Granite stones have the inscriptions painted in black.
Not all CWGC stones are of white Portland!
Kevin's original query is in hand.

Is there one size of cross for the Artillery stones? The one shown looks different from the norm.

The cross is the normal size. I suspect the pic and the type of stone is making it look different. Sizes are standard for the Broad Cross headstones.
This particular stone appears to be 'high' out of the ground.
For those unfamiliar with granite stones....

Cheers Terry for getting te search under way. The epitaph with spaces is 66, so this may have been the reason the went for 66 as it must be one of the most popular epitaphs on a headstone, that and "ever remembered

Mucho thanks Terry. Did the CWGC say anything to where the S came from as all other refs seem to say its just J

Their original docs say 'S J' as the initials. It is not unusual for them to have two initials but only one forename.
