Hi,

I am currently researching a Private in the RWF after acquiring his medals that were left to a friend of mine by (I believe) his last surviving relative. I have obtained his records via Ancestry.co.uk which show that the Theater of War as Austria - is this correct? Other documents I have show that he ended up in Egypt via Gallipoli, some way away from Austria! See below.

UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919
Name: Henry Harold Gwynne
Birth Place: Newtown, Mont.
Residence: Newtown
Death Date: 26 Mar 1917
Rank: Private
Regiment: Royal Welsh Fusiliers
Battalion: 7th Battalion.
Number: 3837/291116
Type of Casualty: Killed in action
Theater of War: Austria

I would be grateful if anyone could clarify/confirm.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unfortunately Ancestry have made a complete pigs ear of indexing SDGW so treat what it with extreme caution and check other sources. Diane has pointed you to a reliable source.

26th March 1917 makes him a casualty of the First Battle of Gaza, where the 7th had 9 officers and 32 ORs killed, 7 officers and 220 ORs wounded. The Regimental Records by Dudley Ward says: "The result of this battle was precisely nil." THe 7th had managed to capture high ground with a possibility of further successful attacks when a withdrawal was for some reason ordered

The CD of soldiers died shows EGYPT.

And the CWGC isnt always reliable - cross references are worth doing if unsure as carmania says above
