Initials: H

Rank: Private

Unit Text: 2nd/7th Bn.
Date of Death: 19/07/1916

SDGW has Aldermas Green, Coventry as the birthplace and the limited surving service papers confirm the same with the age of 19 upon attestation in 1914 (1895) - however, no sign of any family or birth record. Is it an underage attestation?

Any help appreciated.

I have just posted in the original thread on this subject. Henry Barlow has a number that was issued in the 1917 re-numbering of the TF, which poses the question as to whether the men who were posted as missing on this day were not presumed as killed until at least 8 months later and were therefore re-numbered as a matter of course on the presumption that they were POWs for instance. This involves some 25 men of 2/7 RWR.

Terry,

I believe they were posted as missing and later confirmed "died on or since 19/07/16". I have seen that on one set of service papers for one of the 2/7th casualties who has a 6-digit TF number.

I have pictures of 15 of the coventry men named including Barlow. Some of the mens deaths were not reported locally until July, 1917. terry.

My file in total draft is at www.warmemorialpark.co.uk/fromelles.pdf

I think I have more photos but almost 600 to log still.

Has to be said wouldn't have but him as 20.

Coventry telegraph will do an article but I have to write it first

Mel,
Working backwards from 1911, I've found the following candidate - but originally from Staffordshire.

1901
102 Duke St, Fenton, Staffordshire
BARLOW Henry, Head, 40, Bricklayer's Labourer, b Fenton
BARLOW Rose, Wife, 31, b Fenton
BARLOW Gertrude, Dau, 9, b Fenton (b Stoke upon Trent Q3 1891)
BARLOW Hy, Son, 5, b Fenton (b Stoke upon Trent Q4 1895)
BARLOW Arthur, Son, 3, b Fenton (b Stoke upon Trent Q3 1897)

Between 1901 and 1908 they upped sticks and moved to Foleshill district, Warwicks, which covers Alderman's Green ... I think?

1911
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW MR HENRY M 1859 52 Foleshill Warwickshire
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW MRS ROSE F 1871 40 Foleshill Warwickshire
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW GERTIE F 1892 19 Foleshill Warwickshire
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW HENRY M 1895 16 Foleshill Warwickshire
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW ARTHUR M 1897 14 Foleshill Warwickshire
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW SILAS M 1900 11 Foleshill Warwickshire (b Stoke upon Trent Q2 1901, m Beatrice MORAN in Foleshill Q4 1926)
HOUSEHOLD BARLOW WINERFRED F 1908 3 Foleshill Warwickshire (Winifred, b Foleshill Q1 1908)

You'd have to order the 1911 census return to be more certain.

Hope this helps!

Have now downloaded 1911 census and it confirms address in Alderman's Green, Foleshill, Coventry.
(It also confirms that Mr Barlow Sr wasn't very good at filling out census returns! Lots of red ink!)
Remembering one's birthplace obviously wasn't a high priority in previous censuses!

1911
Postal Address: Alderman's Green, Foleshill, Coventry
BARLOW Henry, Head, 52, Miner Hewer, born Marlborough, Wilts
BARLOW Rose, Wife, 40, b Cardiff, Wales
BARLOW Gertie, Sister [sic], 19, b Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs
BARLOW Arthur, Son, 14, b Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs
BARLOW Silas, Son, 11, b Fenton, Staffs
BARLOW Henry, Son, 16, b Fenton, Staffs
BARLOW Winerfred, Dau, 3, b Foleshill, Warwicks
ASKEW Sam, Visitor, 16, Silk Spinner, b Stoneleigh, Warwicks

There's no street address - in the space for "Signature" Mr Barlow has written "five Room house Tenement" - but it must be the right family!

should have asked exactly what are you doing with the data, census records etc. All my info has been passed on to the CWGC and the casualty commission. Which are very glad of the photos

Wow! That is way above and beyond the call of duty.

Some lucky soul will be googling on their family history one day and will hit the jackpot tongue.gif

Many thanks again.

Mel

Ps I can see that I am going to have to set you a few hard ones. cool.gif
