I have found a lot about the ship that T J Hogan was onboard when he lost his life at the battle of Jutland on HMS Calliope. Could a naval expert tell me more about his service please.

Could you decypher it for me please, and does it say "Royalist" just after the box where it says he was killed in action. If so what is that about.

Many thanks in advance.

Kevin

Kevin,
He was a Steward in the Merchant Marine before his R.N., service.
Vivid I - the naval base at Plymouth, Devonport, Officer's Steward 3rd class, 20/11/14 - 20/1/15.
Active - a cruiser type known as Scouts which worked with destroyers, Officer's Steward 2nd class, 21/1/15 - 14/2/15.
Pembroke I - naval base at Chatham, 15/2/15 - 3/5/15.
Calliope - light cruiser, 4/5/15, became Officer's Steward 1st class 15/11/15, Discharged Dead 31/5/16.

His Character was assessed as Very Good & his Ability as Satisfactory throughout his service.

It does appear to have Royalist written on his record but I can't tell you what it refers to. There was a light cruiser of that name in service from 1915.

David.

The ships log for the period is at Kew: ADM 53/36691 CALLIOPE 1916 Apr. 1st. - 1916 June 26th.
This file might show next of kin and maybe the template of the letter sent to the relatives ADM 1/8458/127 HMS CALLIOPE at Jutland. List of Casualties.

Possibly you will be able to read the comment about Royalist on the original, which you'll need to order 3 days in advance from Kew, with the assistance of their team - to show that it can't be read from the 'digitised' version.

Kevin,

He was Commodore Le Mesurier Flag Officer 4th Light Cruiser Squadron's personal Steward. I would suspect he moved his flag to the Royalist for a period hence the mention of Royalist
