Hi, sorry if this is a silly question, but why are there 'new' casualties being added?
ShropshireMad
Not a silly question at all.

These are men who have been identified as dying due to, or during military service. They have been missed for various reasons. The more amazing are the men who were Killed in Action who have been forgotten.

Only last week 2 men i identified were added, i say men, one was 14!

Terry's new site will go along way to answer your questions.

CWGC is charged with maintaining a record of all Commonwealth casualty's of both world wars (besides their bigger duties of maintaining cemeteries and memorials to the missing).

Sadly, the lists supplied to them for WW1 were less than complete and so there are many men who have not received their due commemoration nor do their graves have war grave status (if the grave site is known). There are many individuals and groups who make every effort to correct this situation by undertaking the appropriate research to have them accepted by CWGC and the MoD (or appropriate Commonwealth authority).

These are the most recent cases but many more will follow.

In case your query ( not a silly one) was generated because of their often non war related cause of death, the manner of a serving soldier, sailor or airman's death is not material to their being commemorated. They could have died by being killed in action, died of wounds, illness, accident, suicide or homice or judicial execution. It matters not. Likewise it does not matter where the death occured.

Once CWGC and MoD have undertaken the appropriate verification procedures, the 'new' names are added to the official Debt of Honour and the name added to one of the memorials to the missing or, if the grave is known, it is inspected and a Commission headstone erected if no private memorial is in place.

If this chap died at Fort Pit Military Hospital in Chatham, Kent I wonder how many more can be found merely by searching through the hospitals admission docs (if they still exist of course)?
