I was at a CPD day last week, near Eustone Station, and happened to have a nice-looking pub opposite. In the interestes of research I popped in at lunchtime, and was extremely well-impressed. Extremely, indeed.

Now, I have no idea of what it's like in the evening. It was nice and quiet at lunchtime last Thursday.

No date in mind, but how does this venue suit people for a get-together one evening?

Bree Louise

(I suspect it might have been called the Gardeners Arms in a previous life).

Has a certain much-admired barmaid moved there then?

North London could be a problem for some of us Sarf Lunnon pals who don't have the necessary documentation and innoculations ...
woolly
Do we have the clearances necessary to cross the river?

Did you sample the food as well?

I can see the attraction . . .

Craig and Karen used to run the George on Mortimer Street some years ago - not the same since they left. One of my work colleagues has been to the Bree Louise (several times!) and rates it highly so it should be worth a trip even for those who have to go through passport control to get over the Thames.

I didn't study the bar staff that closely. One, I suspect was Polish; the other was ... well ... willowy ... wub.gif

No. Lunch was provided on the CPD course. However, I did watch (closely) a couple of the pies being devoured by other patrons, and they looked very nice (the pies. Not the patrons).

While I think about it, we could add a bit of on-topic time with a visist to the rather nice but poorly-maintained memorial at Euston Station.

A memorial to my great-uncle no less.... Amongst others, of course.

Shouldn't London meetings of GWF Pals be held at The Old Star? The website gives no clue about the name but I walked past it, unfortunately not during opening hours, whilst in London a couple of months ago and its sign is a picture of the 1914 Star.

No problem Mick - if you can't get a visa you can always go to the Surrey meet being canvassed concurrently! laugh.gif

Nice to see the prospect of a more accessible venue - thanks Steven. The Euston Flyer, opposite St Pancras, is a pretty good pub too - or was before I retired in 2000.

I shall be there this evening, Ron.

What's this about a 'more accessible venue'? How could somewhere half-way to Watford be more accessible ...?

What we need is somewhere roughly central and with a decent amount of outdoor space for summer meets. What is the Anchor at Bankside like these days?

The Old Star is described as "expensive... crowded... antiseptic" by the "Beer in the Evening" website. I haven't been since it was redone.. My vote would be Euston.

At the risk of hijacking Mr. Broomfield's excellent suggestion, anyone anywhere near Putney in the second or third week of October? Chris and self have a 3 week flying visit for the birth of yet another London born grandchild (rumour is it will be a little boy this time smile.gif ), and a drink in a pub to meet some of you would be very exciting!

Cheers

Its been a little while since our last outing so I am sure this can be arranged.
Steven Broomfield
Sounds good to me, but PUTNEY?

That's south of the river.

laugh.gif Anywhere near the river then! We will find you!

The only dates out are the 2 - 4 October and we return Saturday 17th. Otherwise happy to fit in with you all.

I have it on the best of authority that public transportation in London extends to the south of the Thames. hypocrite.gif

Suits me.

How about Monday 12th, somewhere near the river?

Any ideas, anyone (is Euston too far away?).

We'll be easily identifiable: I'll be towing a wheeled laptop case, and Mr Boat will roll his trouser legs up.
Staffsyeoman
I could do 12th - have Travelcard, will travel. The only awkwardness with Putney is changing trains on the District Line to get there (when there are not 'minor' - read awful - delays on it).

There is at least one pub on the river - The Tattershall Castle (aka the 'General Belgrano' to two generations of Whitehall Warriors). And it's 'north' theoretically... but I'll go with the group.

I am happy to meet anywhere...I shall be the one doing the Lambeth Walk OI!

Assuming venue is easily accesable to Marylebone I am still interested.
