This thread has proposed a London gathering on Monday 12th October.
Venue to be decided, but somewhere near the river would be preferred. Any good suggestions, anyone? Only provisos are that it needs space, food preferably, not too noisy if possible, and Real Ale,. (In fact, s*d the rest - just the Real Ale will do).
So, who's up for it, and where shall we go?

Well if you're in dire straits, south of the river you hold everything.
Wish I could be there. Haven't had a beer in London since 1980.

1. Up for it.
2. Can think of several Westminster, off the main drag, decent pubs (not that far from the river).

Imagine that--a meeting in London is being arranged thanks to the intervention of a guy living on a mountaintop in Gerrardstown, West Virginia!
London calling to the faraway towns
Now that war is declared--and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls
London calling ... and I live by the river

I now have an image of Pete smashing up a guitar on a stage...
Oh, Michael, I haven't had a beer in Canada since... October. But it was six years the one before that..
Flying in from Australia. What, you want us to be impressed? Some of us will have to come on the tube!!

Should you hold meet in central London could be tempted to get a train from Bham. Only 18 quid return from Snow Hill and could do a museum during the day!!

Could we go for Euston? Nice and handy for Birmingham, on a load of Tube Lines, and what looks like a jolly boozer. Also a nice war memorial to visit - maybe we could lay a wreath or something.
Anyway, happy to fit in with the rest.

You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on down south, way on down south, London town

Just wondering if there are any definite suggestions re Pubs (I am not nagging the Pals of the Northern Hemisphere you understand

), we head off next week to meet our new 11 lb, repeat 11 lb grandson - I think it may be the water in Putney that has led to the birth of this second row Wallaby.
Cheers

Sounds more like a second row Three Lions to me

I am happy with Euston area if that helps the north of Watford contingent.

Is Monday, 12 October still a go? Mr. O'Dustbroom recently made me his appointments secretary and he requested that I ask.
On a related subject, Lee Ho Fook's roast pork emporium in Soho is now said to have gone out of business.

I have been "invited" to attend a meeting at Head Office on the 12th October, to discuss next year's budget. It's the sort of invitation it would be, shall we say, churlish, to refuse.
Apologies all - have a super evening. I'll be with you in spirit (Grouse, probably).

It looks as though the responsibility for organizing this event devolves to the (almost always

) capable hands of Mr. Forsyth. When it comes to agreeing upon a venue hopefully he will get over his attitude of "Foreigners Begin at Oxford Street."

I think Pete meant an Oxford street. As any fule kno, Cambridge is the only haven of non-foreignerdom (and Eastleigh, of course).

evening all,
apologies from us, i was really looking forward to meeting up with some of you - it has been a really difficult week for us. We arrived last friday (a week ago), have seen the little baby, but unfortunately my mother who was also visiting here to see her great grandson, died 5 hours after we arrived. It was a miracle that we were all in the Trinity hospice, with nearly all the family here, by chance, so we are very thankful for that. I think we are returning to Perth later this week as we will have the main funeral back home.
Take care everyone,
Shirley

Very sorry to hear your sad news, Shirley.
As our visitors can understandably no longer come along on the 12th, several regulars are unable to make that date, and there hasn't exactly been a deluge of pals announcing their intention to be there, I wonder if we should postpone this 'full' London Pals meet until later in October, perhaps then to be followed by another get-together in December, in advance of the inevitable, but unmentionable, seasonal festivity.
I say 'full' London Pals meet because there is, of course, nothing to stop smaller groups of pals within easy reach of each other from getting together anywhere in the London area in the meantime.

As for whether the meeting should go ahead. I am still scheduled to be in London on Monday at my Union HQ in Clapham, it is however a colleagues birthday so I would be having dinner with them about 8pm in any event. So if the meet is postponed that is fine but can this be confirmed so I can be clear what I am or am not doing...cheers

It might be an idea to set a date what with Christmas parties starting soon (it wont be long). I'm quite happy to defer to Siege Gunner's local knowledge for a suitable drinking establishment (or happy to return to the Maquis).

My local knowledge of suitable establishments is rather out of date, so I'm not the best person to suggest an alternative to the Marquis (I think there might be some resistance to going to the 'Maquis'

). The Marquis is convenient for Victoria and the beer and food are good, but there's no suitable place for a group of people to congregate, and the music is intrusive. Also, as several regular attenders smoke, it would be good to find somewhere with a covered outdoor area for us to fume in ...

Has any suggested the 'Dolphin Tavern' in Holborn? Nice small (small may be the problem) pub, and appropriately it was bombed by a Zepp in 1915, the clock on the wall survived the pub being blasted out and is still on the wall today, with the hands frozen - did my first magazine article on it, and a good selection of proper alcohol and even food

I'd be up for a trip to The Dolphin. Never been there before but did know about its being bombed. The Bree Louise near Eutson station, mentioned earlier, is also very good - numerous ales served direct from the cask. Food is pretty good thgere too - can get busy though in the couple of hours just after work.
