Dear All
yes you've guessed it we are off to the peninsula again in September. We are planning to spend most time in the Suvla area and Gully Ravine of course, but we'd be happy to visit any cemeteries if you have any requests.

Hi Lyn,
Was on to you a few days ago about the 1st RDF and would ask if at all possible when you're there, if you could take a photo of the "dublin castle". I know the discussion on this forum on whether this is an actual structure or a mound/hill goes on, but would really appreciate a photo even in the general area. Oh and by the way.... I am so green with envy that you're going. Some day soon.. some day soon
Thanks a mill

If you are going to be in the area of Scimitar Hill, could you get me one shot from Scimitar to Tomba Tepe (and if you up for a 'penance' and prepared for a shortish cross country hike, the reverse shot from Tomba Tepe to Scimitar). Tomba Tepe is one of the less well known features of the area, so I can send you a Google Earth aer photo annotated with these features if you think you might be able to fit this in.
Enjoy the peninsula. Suvla rates 5 stars in my book.

Several years ago we walked across the Salt Lake from Lala Baba into the low hills. There was a cemetry we had lunch at (can't remember its name) and outside the main entrance to it was a
magnificent Arbutus tree with bright green leaves and pinkish red trunk and branches. If you come across it again (Scimitar Hill rings a bell) I'd love a photo or two of the tree.

that should be no problem - we'll enjoying doing that for you, but is it just general pictures of the Hill and from the Hill or any specific view?

we fly to Istanbul and after one night hotel stopover we then hire a car and drive to the peninsula. There we stay at Gallipoli Houses in Kocadere with the very lovely Eric and Ozlem.

It would also be really nice to see pictures in this area as I believe that the views from here are very good. (not sure how true that is)

Dear All,
hopefully all photo requests now received - Keith and I enjoyed fitting these in to our planned schedule. Another very successful trip with time spent walking on the Suvla Plain and in Gully Ravine, as well as our usual visit to V Beach to remember the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
The weather was kind to us and our hosts at Gallipoli Houses were as splendid as ever. We also had the privilege to meet Bill and Serpil Sellars.
Kind regards

I recieved my pictures and it was very kind of you to go to the trouble to locate the grave and take the pictures including ones of the location. It has made me decide that it is one place that I will have to visit especially as I conduct more research on the campaign.

Hi Ger
I am also interested in the RDF, but I am very new to this forum and to searching. I am looking for information on 2nd Lieut J A H Taylor, who was killed in Suvla Bay on 24 Sept 1915. I have found details of his grave at CWGC. Can you please point me in the right direction to find out more information about the RDF? What were they doing there? When did they arrive? What were their conditions like? Where did the men come from etc - just to try to build a picture of their lives.
Thanks!

Thanks Steve - hope you don't mind but I had a look at your photos. They are truly wonderful - we tend to have images of the war in black and white, and think of the soldiers as being in dark and cold and mist - but these showed just how beautiful Suvla bay is - and yet it is tainted by the bodies of those young men who fell.
From your pictures I have been able to see where the men landed - and am now left wondering what a young man from Dublin felt and thought when he arrived there in August - how different from the cold grey skies of Dublin!

Pleased that you found them of use.
The 1st Bn RDF landed in April. Do you know when he joined up?
The 29th Div where based in Warwickshire prior to leaving for Gallipoli.
Azmak is a beautiful cemetery and I spent an hour there on my own. It was truly amazing.
Cheers
