On August 27th Private Maurice Colvin Montgomery Rutherfurd (699) would

predecease his older brother. Both of them served as privates. Maurice was born in

1888 the son of the Rev. Henry Rutherfurd and Mrs. Rutherfurd, at Torquay. He came

to Summer Fields in 1897 and went onto Rugby in 1901. He was married to Ruth

Marian Rutherfurd (nee Durrant), of Beech Hill, Farnham Common, Bucks. During

the war Maurice served with the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regt.) and died

aged 27. He is buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, in Belgium. His brother, Henry,

would die on the Somme just less than a year later.

We will Remember him.

Regimental number 77226, he died with the 7th Battalion, CEF. They had just gone into trenches near Grande Mungue Ferme. The enemy artillery was very active on the 27th, and there were many casualties.

Thanks for the detail Broznitsky,

He was an Old Boy from the school I teach at who I had few details on. Does anyone know how he turned up in Canada or fighting with them?

On his attestation when he joined the 30th Overseas Battalion in November 1914, he stated he was a law student, living in Victoria, B.C. with his wife; a member of the 88th Victoria Fusiliers Militia unit; and had three years service with the Royal North West Mounted Police.

Here is Maurice and his wife Ruth travelling to Canada in March 1911 on the ship Lake Manitoba. It shows he was in Canada previously from 1907-1911. They were headed to Kamloops, BC.

Here he is arriving in Canada in October 1907 on the ship Southwark: Maurice Rutherford . It says he was headed to Montreal.

Edit: Here is Maurice and his wife Ruth in the 1911 Canadian Census at Kamloops, BC: Maurice and Ruth Rutherford

Thank you all so much - you Canadians know where to look and do it fast! This has considerably improved my picture of him.
