Hi All,
recently seen on Australian TV is the Canadian Series "Finding the Fallen". The program has been excellent.

My concern with episode 2 is a French Farmer finding a Canadian Cavalryman, burying him in a grave on his property and erecting a memorial. I would have thought any remains found would require reporting to authorities and for CWGC to take control and arrange a proper burial. He also appeared to have some of the soldiers personal items on display in his shed.

Any comments,

Graeme

Episode 2: Man & Horse
In the First World War, men on horseback with swords fight against an emerging modern weapon, the machine gun. In Northern France, on the site of a cavalry charge into the face of relentless machine gun fire, the Trench Detectives discover evidence of a desperate act of bravery that stopped the German advance in the Spring of 1918, but decimated the ranks of a Canadian cavalry unit. It was the last great cavalry charge of the First World War, and it was made by Canadian soldiers.

As the poignant relationship between these men and their horses is explored, a French farmer reveals a mystery that lead the team to a car dealer in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta whose ancestor died on that fateful day and whose last resting place was, until now, unknown to him.

Hi Graeme,

If this is the same programme that was shown on UK television recently, it was about Gordon Flowerdew VC, of Lord Strathcona's Horse, killed leading his men on a cavalry charge.

He is buried at Namps-au-Val British cemetery in France, and I believe that whilst his remains were certainly found on the edge of the wood, all that is there now, is a memorial to him. The farmer has made a collection of artefacts, and Flowerdew's descendant was traced in Canada and met the farmer and viewed the memorial.

There is a bit on Wiki here.

His grave details are on the CWGC

Cheers,
