Our guest speaker at tomorrow night's Northamptonshire WFA meeting is Sue Light, on A Nurse’s Life in France and Flanders

Sue writes:
There is relatively little written about
military nurses’ lives and work during
the Great War and it is almost
exclusively based on a small number of
personal memoirs, most of which
concentrate on the more dramatic
events that occurred in hospitals and
casualty clearing stations. They say
much about the soldier and the war, but
little about the life of the nurses
themselves, who are often portrayed as
‘angels’ or ‘heroines.’ This talk, with
accompanying images, tries to give
some idea of how women from very
different backgrounds coped with the
basic living conditions of ‘active service’
in France and Flanders and tries to
represent them as professional women
doing the job of work for which they
were trained – and definitely not ‘all
angels.’

The meeting begins at 7.30pm in the Ex-Servicemen's Club, Sheep Street, Northampton NN1 2NE. Ample car parking at the rear of the building, but please record your registration number in the book on the bar on arrival. All welcome.
