I'm planning a trip to Gallipoli and was reading Holt's guide which says that the cemeteries have no registers in apart from on special days. Is this true?

I do not remember seeing any registers last year.

Hi Matt,
there are no registries at any of the CWGC cemeteries, these are held at the Commission office in Canakkale. As I understand it, there was never any provision for registers to be placed at any of the cemeteries, the sites being seen as rather isolated when built in the 1920s.
On April 25 the small memorial room (for want of a better phrase) inside the central memorial at Lone Pine is opened for visitors after the Australian service. There is usually a book there for visitors to sign. I don't recall any registers being there on the day.
Cheers

May I suggest staying at "Gallipoli Houses", owned by Forum Member Eric Goossens.

I would like to second the recommendation for staying at the Gallipoli Houses. I've been twice and I hope to get back next year. I had hoped to go this year but had to change my plans. I really wouldn't recommend a place to stay unless Ifelt it was worth it. Eric and Ozlem are wonderful hosts and have proved really helpful when making travel arrangements.

Hi Matt,
while it might be unseemly for me to plug Eric and Ozlem's place, as they are friends, yes it is all it is cracked up to be (despite being a local I have stayed there).
That said, the Kum is fine, and the beach and pool great but it depends on when you are visiting. The Kum usually closes in late autumn and is shut during the winter, not usually reopening for business until March or so. This can vary but if you are thinking about the Kum keep this in mind.
It can also depend if you plan on having your own transport and what sector's you are interested in. The Gallipoli Houses are the closest option to the Anzac and Suvla sectors, while the Kum is about six kilometres from Anzac Cove but if you are planning to focus on the Helles sector, there are some options down that way too, while Eceabat also has hotels, restaurants etc.)
Cheers

Thanks for the advice this is firmly in the planning stage only at the moment but I was thinking of Houses of Gallipoli, and probably looking to visit next May.

Matt - to reiterate what others have said, a huge recommendation for the Gallipoli Houses. I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else

Hi Peter
I was wondering what your opinion is on staying there without transport and having the idea of spending a number of days walking (and contemplating and resting and just looking) in the Anzac sector.

Public transport on the Peninsula is very limited so might I suggest that
you and your group look into a couple of hire cars from Eceabat or I have used
on a couple of occasions a drop off and pick up taxi.
I have always found the taxi's to be very reasonalbe and reliable and will be there
waiting to pick you up at an agreed point on time.
For the best information on transport I suggest that you contact Eric at Gallipoli Houses
or Bill Sellars who uses the Forum member name of eceabat on this forum.
Hope that I can meet up with you and partner and your friends in May.

In answer to the original question as to whether there are registers in the Gallipoli CWGC cemeteries, the answer is no.
The book by Phil Taylor and Pam Cupper - Gallipoli A Battlefield Guide - published by Kangaroo Press, has plans of the layouts of the various cemeteries which proved very helpful when looking for specific graves. The plot numbers tend to be inscribed slabs in the grass.

Thanks for bringing me back on track.
Last time that I enquired , the Taylor and Cupper Battlefield Guide was out of
print but fortunately I have a copy.
If I have a name , I use the CWGC records search to locate a plot.

There is a register in the French cemetery office (which was really helpful to a member of our group in September). The register was only available through the staff member in the office. I think the cemetery is not always open.
Re Taylor and Cupper. I searched for this online for a long time with no results. However just recently a copy turned up and I feel so fortunate to have it.

I think the Taylor and Cupper book had an edition in 1989 and 1990 and nothing since. It occasionally comes up on Abe books and other sites, but at a price! I am lucky enough to have a copy and found it useful and interesting.

Very sad, and not a little strange Taylor & Cupper has never been reprinted. It is one of the best guidebooks to any battlefield I have ever read.
