I have just realised that my Grandfather was effectively discharged 90 years ago today.

It took a little working out from four of his papers:

  • Soldiers Demobilisation Account. This shows he was paid £35 10s 6p in 5 payments. It included a War Gratuity of £16 10s and an overcoat valued at £1.
  • Certificate of Transfer to Reserve on Demobilisation. This became effective on 21st Oct 1919.
  • Out-Of-Work Donation Policy. Issued at Fovant No. 1 office. This states he is in "Industrial Group 37". Does anyone know what this is?
  • Clothing Slip To Dispersal Certificate. This is dated 21st Sept 1919.

The key to confirming his discharge date is that the "Soldiers Demobilisation Account" states that a soldier has 28 days furlough prior to the transfer being effective.

PS if he returned the overcoat he would have got his £1 back. I wonder if he did!
