Does anyone have access to copies/ transcripts of 111 squadron unit diaries from mif 1917 though late 1919 ? I'm trying to get info about a cousin, Lt. John Mills (service casualty, 1919) who seved in this squadron.

John,
I haven't got the diaries, but I do have a copy of a typescript (National Archives Kew AIR/1/1949/204/254/4) entitled "The History of No. 111 Squadron RAF from its formation to the cessation of hostilities". I found it useful for info on a single airman I was interested in. I'd be happy to give it try for you...

John,

There may be some mention of your cousin in 5th Wing Daily Routine Orders as well - they tend to be quite comprehensive where they survive. 111 Sqn were at Kantara from 20.10.18 before heading to Rameleh on 6.2.19. The unit was disbanded on 1 Feb 1920.

Regards,

Trevor

I'd appreciate that. The cousin is Lt. John McFarlane Denholm Mills AFC. He transferred into the RFC in May 1917 from the British West Indies Regiment, died 22/6/1919 in a plane crash in Cairo, his AFC was gazetted in October '19

John,
Regret no mention of Lt John Mills in that typescript history of the Squadron. Good luck with other channels.

Have you tried AIR 76/348 or AIR 76/349 for his officers service records?
Also at the UK National Archives:
AIR 27/865/1 No 111 Squadron: Operations Record Book. 1917 Jun 1 - 1920 Apr 30

Thanks, but I live in the US, so no ready access to Kew. Maybe on some future visit to the UK.

You can request the UKNA to give you an estimate for coping the documents using their shop online facility.

I've done that a few times, but their costs tend to be really high, because they aren't going to review the documents to find just what you want (or, more accurately, they charge a pound a minute to do that research !!), so they quote a cost to copy the whole file/ record - some of these files are quite extensive so the quote can be hundreds of pounds !!

The other routes are request a look up or try a researcher.
