Hello all from your friend here at Veterans Affairs Canada.

It is my honour and pleasure to announce the launch of the Canada Remembers - First World War Audio Archive Web feature on our Web site.

It has been a hard slog by my colleagues in the Web Content Unit in converting hours upon hours of tapes of interviews with First World War Veterans into digital format, transcribing, close captioning, and all that fun stuff I can barely begin to comprehend or describe.

Please copy and paste the link above into your browser, if the direct link doesn't work.

Enjoy, and cheers to all.

Chris, that is simply a stunning piece of work. Congratulations to Canada, once again showing the world how to do these things.

Chris, I have just had a look on the website and extend my congratulations to you and your team. A stunning piece of work.
I have just read "Forgotten voices of the great war" that transcribes what soldiers have said during thier recollections of world war 1. Whilst reading it, I thought "it would be great to hear these stories direct from the soldiers mouths."

That is exactly what your website does.

I wonder if the IWM in London has undertaken similar work that is in the public domain (or available on CD?)

Once again Chris, well done.

Sean.

Outstanding work.

As well as the first hand accounts, I particularly enjoyed the section covering the work of William Stark.

Thank you.

Regards,
EoB.

Chris,

Many congratulations, as those who have already stated this is both a stunning piece of work and it shows how these things should be done.

Like Sean, I would also like to know if there are any UK based websites that have such content?

Many thanks for posting the link.

All the very best,

Ian.

A really stunning achievement!

Is one allowed to download them?

Hello Sean and Ian,

I'm not certain what our friends in the UK are up to, but I do know the BBC has some good archives and learning resources for educators.

I did come across this site a few weeks ago from our counterparts in Australia: http://www.awmlondon.gov.au/

I really love the Google Earth effect they used. It's a bloody awesome sight. As a heads-up, we will be launching two new Web features in the next few months, one on the Sicily Campaign, and another on the Italian Campaign. I know, I know, SWW stuff, but... rolleyes.gif

Cheers.

Hi MartH,

Good question. I haven't tried, and as I noted in my original post, I'm not totally techie savvy. There may be restrictions on use. I'll check with our Web folks, and post back here.

Cheers,

Chris
