William became an orphan in 1905 after his mother died, his father died in 1904. Before he reached 11 he saw three of his nieces die, two of childhood diseases and one who fell into an open fire and died of complications in her recovery (the three of them lie in paupers graves in Droylsden Cemetery, Manchester.

William enlisted at the age of 16 and was wounded on the Somme in July 1916. William died in a working party on the 1 October 1917 leading up to the battle of Poelkapelle. He is buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery.

He was only discovered as part of my family 8 weeks ago, my Great Great Uncle will now never be forgotten.
