Hi folks,
does anyone have or know where to find a crew list for HMS Jupiter from February 1915 - May 1915, I believe at this time HMS Jupiter made history by being the first ship ever to break through the ice and reach Archangel in the winter. I think one of my local men was awarded the Russian Medal for Zeal for his navigation of the above vessel. Any help would be very much appreciated,
cheers, Jon

Jon.
I stand to be corrected but I don't think there were/are Royal Navy crew lists for WW1.
Foreign awards were announced in The London Gazette. Is your man listed in this announcement about officers of HMS Jupiter? See right-hand column.
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/29373/pages/11470You may also possibly find some mention in his service record.

I confirm that there are no crew lists available for RN ships for WW1.
There was probably an Admiralty and/ or Foreign Office file giving the background for these awards. The Admiralty one if it hasn't been weeded, can be found using the ADM12 indexes, looking for the man's name.

Thanks for the replies gents,
my man was a RNR Leading Seaman and so does not appear on the list but it certainly looks like a few awards were handed out amongst the crew,
cheers, Jon

From a two page article in the October 1987 issue of Coin & Medal News, Russian Medals to HMS Jupiter, by H. Spencer Lloyd.
"However there is no record of awards to other ranks, but there is no doubt that they all received the Russian Medal for Zeal. Interestingly in the March 1987 issue of The Volunteer item 419 includes the Russian Medal for Bravery 4th class to a Stoker PO HMS Jupiter".

A number of Aberystwyth RNR men served on the Jupiter and received these awards (H.S.Lloyd was based in Aber., hence his interest).

The award might also appear on his service card. Microfiche copies are in BT377/7 at Kew (in service number order), the originals are at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. As he was in his third engagement with the RNR there will be cross references to his previous two service cards and to his next if he signed on again.

I have a Russian Medal for Zeal awarded to{Impressed in large sans serif capitals like the early Geo V & Edward VII LSGCs} to Shipwright Richard Thompson of HMS Jupiter,he was also entitled to the 1914~15 Star,BWM Victory & LSGC as well as possibly a QSA?? The Russian award is sadly not mentioned on his Service Sheet.

as well as possibly a QSA??
What ship/ ships did he serve on 1899-1902?
As I wrote earlier, it is better to find the original recommendation file, sadly details of awards can be left of of service sheets, which is why I only said might.
