This man appears to have enlisted/attested twice, the first time in November, 1914, and again in September, 1915. Short of ordering up his Service Papers does anyone have any ideas as to why this should be?

William Beach

Many thanks.

Andy.

Hello again Andy

The most likely explanations are that he was under age the first time, or failed the medical, or possibly had in some way given a false answer on enlistment.

A few details from the Attestation papers:

19th Battalion
AP dated 11 Nov 1914
Prior svc - 1 yr 32 Bty CFA
28 yrs old; fit

84th Battalion
"Original" AP; Svc No. 164014
AP dated - 28 Aug 1915
Prior svc - 7 months 19th Bty Toronto
29 yrs old; fit

75th Battalion (84th Bn crossed out)
"Triplicate" AP - 164014
AP dated - 28 Aug 1915
Prior svc - 7 months 19th Bty Toronto
29 yrs old; fit

It does not appear to be an underage enlistment or a firness to serve issue.

The third AP is a file copy of the second, with the 84th Battalion stamp crossed out and replaced by the 75th Battalion stamp. the 84th Bn was absorbed into the 73rd and 75th Battalions in England.

The early attestation for the 19th Battalion will likely remain a mystery that may be solved with the service record. Considering it was early in the War, perhaps he had family issues that caused him to apply for a discharge until he could re-attest. Perhaps it was a disciplinary release, or a short term medical issue that prevented him from continuing to train with or go overseas with the 19th Battalion.

Thanks guys. I've passed this on to the person who has been asking me and I'll leave it up to them to decide whether they want to order up his service records to resolve the issue once and for all.

If the person you're doing this for has access to the Brantford Expositor from this period it may be worth taking a few hours to see if anything is printed in it about him. But the most expedient route would simply be to order the service records.

I doubt it; they live in Lowestoft. Thanks anyway.

Best wishes.

I believe that one of the librarians with the Brantford Public Library researches the community's involvement in the war. I'm fairly certain his name if Geoffrey, and that he uses his name for his handle; you may be able to contact him via the cefresearch forum.

In case it's of interest, the library's local history/genealogy page:
