Anyone interested in the power and accuracy of German super heavy howitzers might be interested in a series of photographs of the destruction of a railway viaduct at Dannemarie between Belfort and Mulhouse on 30th May 1915. The photographs are on the Pages 14-18 site HERE. A 42 cm Krupp Gamma morser firing at 11500 metres range did the damage and the photos show a group of French soldiers examining a shell crater from the registration shoot while, in the background, the viaduct is being blown sky high.

If I read the post correctly, the 42cm battery - KMK 1 commanded by Hauptmann Solf - fired 50 shots at the viaduct. Considering the cost of each 42cm round, it was not a very efficient means. In a post war article, Hauptmann Becker of KMK 2 wrote about how using 42cm Gamma howitzers to fire on point targets was a waste of ammunition. I think that must be the case here as well.

No matter thought, because the photographs are very interesting.
