I've been given a silver war medal issued to B.Z. 10962 G.DAVIS Ord R.N.V.R

I'm guessing that is Ordinary Seaman B.Z. 10962 G.DAVIS Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Beyond that I know nothing about the lot in blue sailing on the oggin. Can anyone help out with info or suggestions about how to find out more please.

Thanks

There are only two RNVR ratings with the number 10962 that I could find in the NA Catalogue, and it depends on which Division he was allocated the number.
ADM337/16 has Bristol ratings with the number range Z10801 to 11821. You might argue that B for Bristol must make the number, as you quote, BZ10962. It might not be that easy !
ADM337/81 has Sussex ratings with the number range Z10401 to 11400.
All other Divisions (Clyde/London/Mersey/Palace/and Wales) don't reach the heights of your number.

As the original post has his name as well as number it is nice and easy:
Name Davis, George William
Service Number: Z/10962
RNVR Division: Bristol
Date of Birth: 28 September 1899

All Admiralty issued numbers were unique and as Charles has so ably demonstrated all prefixes have a meaning which can readily be discovered. Unfortunately the staff uploading the data at the UK National Archives seems to consider the prefixes to be adornments rather than an integral part of the number.
