In memory of my grandfather's cousin Frederick Walter Schofield, who served as Private 271722 in the 1/1st Hertfordshire Regiment. Frederick was killed in action this day on 24th October 1918 during the battalion's attack on the Gaissignies and Salesches area, most probably as a result of the heavy machine gun fire they came up against (see the diary entry for the 24th October on forum member Steve Fuller's website here).

Frederick was born and lived in Bildeston, Suffolk, and was the son of Frederick William and Margaret Kate Schofield. To my knowledge, Frederick is the only fatality of the battalion that day who sadly does not have a known grave. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.

Frederick, you are Not Forgotten poppy.gif

Steve, sad indeed that Frederick is the only fatality of the Battalion on that day without a known grave.

Best regards,

Ian.
