London-based members may be interested to know that there will be a showing of “La Grande Illusion” at the French Institute (17 Queensberry Place, SW7) on Monday, 9 November at 8.15 pm.



France [1937] b&w, 113 minutes, director Jean Renoir, with Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim.



“This screening marks the publication of two books devoted to the film, one by historian Julian Jackson, and one by French cinema specialist Martin O’Shaughnessy. The film will be introduced by the two authors, who will lead a discussion with the audience after the screening.”

I can't make it, sadly, but this is possibly the best film set in wartime ever made, and a stupendous evocation of class and nationality.
