Hi,
I am trying to trace the service of my Great Grandfather with what appears to be minimal information.
Name: Thomas Taylor
Home: North Shields
Ship: HM Battleship 'Malaya'
I know this is a long shot, but all help is welcome.
Regards
Chris

No crew lists survive for RN ships for this period, so you need more information as Charles suggests.

If he was born in North Shields, this naval record could be his:-
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1However, it is a common name and if he was born elsewhere..... And, of course, he may not have been a naval rating but in the RMA or RMLI. Or even RNR in WW1.
There are more than 270 records that could match from RN,RM.

Plus another 22 RNVR listings. I note Chris that you say he was 'from' North Shields do you mean he was born there?

The Navy didn't use MICs, they had alphabetical medal rolls and your Great Grandfather's should be shown in ADM 171/116. I'd be surprised if he didn't have a 1914-1915 Star trio.

Per Ardua,
I have just tried the NA but could get no further than the heading ADM171/116.
Could you advise with a step by step instruction of how to access please
regards

Naval medal rolls are on microfilm, not online. If you make a document request in the 'look ups' sub forum someone may come up trumps for you. If you ask them at Kew they'll probably try and charge you for the entire piece.
