2nd Lt J.S Cryan R.A.F was killed while serving with 218 Squadron on 11/08/1918. He is mentioned on my sons school war memorial. My son is doing a Project for Rememberance Day amd i wonder if any Forum members can add anything about him and his service.

According to Trevor Henshaw's "The Sky Their Battlefield" and Chris Hobsen's "Airmen Died in the Great War", Lt John Scarisbrick Cryan was killed in action on 11/08/18 with 218 squadron whilst flying as observer in DH9 No: C1207. His aircraft, piloted by Lt H Fawdry, was hit by anti aircraft fire near Zeebrugge and went down in flames. He was buried at Zeebrugge. His pilot was also killed.

To add a little more to the story:
on 23 June 1918, Lt H Fawdry and 2/Lt J S Cryan were returning from a raid in DH 9 B7676 when the aeroplane overshot Petite Synthe aerodrome while landing and hit a lorry;
while flying DH 9 D7272, Fawdry and Cryan were credited with a Pfalz D.III out of control on 2 July, and an Albatros crashed 2/3 miles north of Nieuport at 18:35 on 5 July.
I hope that this is useful.

Izzy, 2nd Lt Cryan also gets two mentions in Flight magazine, one for 27th June 1918 in the RAF Appointments section for 18th June, in that:
"The following cadets are granted temp, commns. as Sec. Lieuts. (Obs. Officers) : . . . . . May 31st. J. S. Cryan . . . . ."
and later on after his death in the Roll of Honour published on 5th September 1918, where he is listed as 'Missing'.

He probably has a record in AIR 76/116 although, these can be very brief. You can request an estimate for paper or digital copies online:
