ly a place we can view how the memorials & there surroundings have changed over the years. Purton to the west of Swindon, unveiled 26th December 1920, 55 names listed for the Great War, partly funded by money leftover from the POW fund. Unfortunately unable to trace documented evidence as to the committee formed to organise the Memorials design location & who should be named upon it. One of the named died out of service in civilian industry completely unconnected with the Great War, whilst other village residents died and were not included in similar fashion to many similar Memorials around the country. The memorial stands on land donated by the landowner of College Farm, with road improvements the Memorial now stands in a walled garden maintained by the local RBL branch, this week it will again be illuminated making it a striking site as you drive through the village. Picture 2 was taken today at the annual Service at 2:30, not as well attended as last year but the service was brought upto date by the Vicar in her address about today`s youth & the service that they give.

Sorry I dont have a comparison for this pic, someone may !, it shows the dedication of Brough, east yorks memorial, my grandfathers home village. The military gentleman i believe is Col. B.G.Price, 150 brigade,50th northumbrian division.

John.

Thanks for that John, hopefully more to follow from around the country. The Gentleman sen to the front of Purton Memorial is Col Canning with Cannon Rawlins.

and the same view, 4th November 2009:

Behind the memorial is a small wall listing names, but unfortunately they have weathered and are also partially obscured by the trees. The date of the 1939-45 war has been added to the plinth.

All,

I just wanted to say a thank you to those who have posted the fascinating comparative images on this thread. It will be very interesting to see how its develops, I have a feeling it could be a classic thread once more forum pals become aware of it.

All the best,

Ian.

If I may make a suggestion, I think it would be interesting, and equally poignant, to include war memorials of other nations.
