Full Version: Use Google news to find original newspaper articles

I thought many would be interested to know that its possible to use Google news to read original newspaper articles from 1915 onwards which mention Fromelles.

I noticed many are Australian, have memorial notices to family members and give an interesting insight into how the battle was reported. The first news seems to appear on 22nd July 1916.

To do the search go onto Google and click the Google news link.

Then type in Fromelles

the alternative is type- "19th July 1916"- may bring up articles from the time mentioning relatives who did not know at the time their relative had been killed at Fromelles.

Then look at the left hand side and you can see dates of when they have newspaper articles. Then click on 1915-1916. You even get a graph telling you the frequency of articles.

The Australian newspapers that appear in Google News Advanced Search results are most likely from the NLA (National Library of Australia) site. These have been scanned and made available through the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. I think they currently have about 34 Australian newspapers for various years online and are progressively adding more years and newspapers. And it's all free.
