In memory of George Murrell, who served as Lance Bombardier 34885 in 5 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. George died of wounds this day, 31st October 1918, aged 25. He was the son of Robert and Ellen Murrell of Battersea, London.

George was a pre-war regular in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and arrived on the strength of 5 Siege Battery in September 1914 and was still serving in the Battery by the autumn of 1918.

By late October 1918 an advanced section (attached to 16 Division) of 5 Siege Battery was in position to the northwest of Velvain. The other two sections (remaining with 46 Brigade, RGA) were at Drumetz performing counter-battery work. Around this time the sections at Drumetz were stricken with a sickness of unknown origin and suffered 80 casualties as a consequence.

It is unknown as to whether George was with the two sections at Drumetz or the advanced section at Velvain when he was wounded. He now rests in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille.
