Our local newspaper has printed an article concerning the British Transport ship Marquette being located by divers off the coast of Greece in May this year.

Our Christchurch Hospital has a memorial chapel to remember local 3 nurses - Nona Hildyard, Margaret Rogers & Lorna Rattray who were on board. They were drowned when the ship was torpedoed by U35 on October 23rd 1915.

The nurses were attached to the New Zealand No. 1 Stationary Hospital - There were a total of 36 nurses lead by an Australian Matron, Marion Cameron, 9 Officers, 9 NCOs and 77 Orderlies.

10 Nurses, 19 members of the NZMC & 3 Privates were drowned along with 125 others.

It is only in the last 2 weeks that the Christchurch Hospital Chapel Staff were advised of the Marquette's discovery and they look forward to receiving fresh information concerning the sinking. It will also help to bring closure to the families concerned.

We remember those who gave their lives for the freedom we now enjoy.

The following is the version given in the British OH (Naval Operations Vol.III by Sir Julian S. Corbett)
"On October 19 the transport Marquette (7,000 tons) had left Egypt for Salonica with the Ammunition Column of the XXIXth Division and the New Zealand Stationary Hospital. On board were thirty-six nurses, twenty-two officers and 588 other ranks, besides 541 animals. Unmolested she entered the Gulf of Salonica on October 23, and there only some thirty miles short of the anti-submarine net, she was torpedoed by U 35. British and French patrol boats were quickly on the spot, and before she sank were able to rescue the greater part of those on board… …
Footnote: By October 28 there were still unaccounted for 128 troops, ten nurses and twenty-nine of the crew, all of whom were eventually reported killed."
