This will no doubt cause a storm of righteous indignation, but I suspect the men these monuments commemorate would simply dismiss it with wolf-whistles and ribald comments.
A storm in a T-cup, and making a great fuss about it will only encourage other idiots to do it.

I concur, however we can not just let it pass without making our feelings known, sometimes people get over excited about the gate, the other night I saw skate boarders going under it and felt a red mist, I then wound my neck back in as they were doing no harm, however this is something completely different

Pretty revolting, on all levels, but why give these ghastly people the oxygen of publicity?
Actually, why give them oxygen at all?

Funny - when I first read the title of this thread I jumped to the erroneous conclusion it was talking about Mount Sorrell near Loughbrough where Rolls Royce had a factory and I was wracking my brain to think why there would be a Canadian memorial there! However she does look like one of the tea ladies we had - but then so did Les Dawson. Not that we had naked tea ladies - aarrrrgh.
I think the old and best advice is 'ignore them and they'll go away' (the alternative would be a fire hose).

Well I think that she is a gorgeous BBW. You are all being so unkind with your comments after all the article is in Flemish so it could be that she is raising money for the poppy appeal or doing other good works. I think we need a translation before condemning the f** c**.

The photo with the wreath is pretty gross/crass by any measure, but the image of the same woman face-down on the memorial plinth, wearing a Brodie, is somehow more becoming and almost artistic. Photo postcards of Juno-esque ladies were very popular in those days, and she does almost look as if she belongs there. I think the sculptor of the plinth might well have enjoyed carving her ample contours as well.

Sorry, but why is that woman doing this to a Canadian war monument to the dead? And how is "degradation" or "humiliation" being portrayed here? ("vernedering"). Is it a statement or some kind of performance art? Can someone please translate the article?

At least she isn't (as far as I can see) urinating on the memorial - unlike one of our drunken students here in Sheffield a few weeks' ago. By the way - the yobbo concerned was due to appear before the Beaks, but I've not heard how he fared.

I really don't think we should dignify this farce with sensible comment - apart from the obvious disrespect - that the token wreath and brodie cannot ameliorate in my opinion - what baffles me is how such a travesty can be regarded as in any way artistic and worthwhile doing.

I think he is quoting Hanns Johst (a man who liked wearing brown shirts) - well if so he won't be the first to nick the phrase - a rather large ex WW1 fighter pilot pinched it first. Not illustrious company

I don't condone this stunt any more than you do, Ian, but the 'with Brodie' photo does have something about it that disinclines me to jump aboard the 'outrage bus' (a concept I learned about recently from the ARSSE forum). The other photo, however, is crass in the extreme. As long as no malice is intended or physical damage done, I personally am not going to get agitated about such things - especially as I'm sure that far worse has been done over the last 90+ years, but without being recorded on film.

Do you know the original wording in German, Centurion? The commonly cited translation of Göring's quote mentions 'culture', but I've never found the original.

"Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning!" - complete with punctuation!
The line in a play of his is I think rather more interesting than the common version - when he hears the word culture, he releases the safety-catch on his Browning.
I think he probably would have shot the fatso on the war memorial Canadian or not. He was the Nazi Brecht apparently. Not a lot of people know that - I didn't until 2 minutes ago.

I sent an e-mail to the CWGC about this and received a very prompt reply. They are aware of the incident, have spoken to the newspaper and inform me that Canadian authorities have been made aware of the incident. The photos were taken by Peter Verschuere from Kortemark. They were taken on July 21, 2009. The theme was apparently Love and Peace.....

And besides, who here on the forum hasn't ended up face down and naked on a war memorial in Belgium or France every once in a while? Umm, okay, bad example..never mind.
