Hi

Can any Royal Navy buffs help me with this one.

Charles Baylis (or Bayliss) is commemorated on the Walsall RoH. The Walsall Observer carried the following:-

There is no CWGC entry, nor is there any mention of him being on the lists of HMS Shark.

I have downloaded his service record and he seems to have served until 1925. (If I've got the correct one !!)

Anyone any ideas or am I researching the wrong bloke !!!

Cheers,

Graeme

Could he have been in Anson Divn on land? See:

You might get the story of his demise from the Anson War Diary in WO95/3111,part of 63(RN)Division,though your man has Walsall and this was a Bristol rating !

I think that he was more likely to have been:
Name Bayliss, Charles Official Number: J13531 Place of Birth: Staffordshire Date of Birth: 11 July 1895

If one accepts the UKNA data entry Able Seaman Charles Bayliss did not serve at sea (he only has an RND card and not a sea service register entry); nor did he get promoted to Leading Seaman.

Hi

Thank you both for replying.

My gut feeling is that he survived the war. I know of another instance where a 'live' man has been placed on a memorial.

Darlaston War memorial has the name of a Royal Engineer on it (the name escapes me at the moment) who survived the war. I worked with a relative of his and the survivor thought it mighty amusing his name was on the memorial.

Regards,

Graeme
