I had the pleasure of visiting Fromelles on Thursday.
Unfortunately the mass burial site was closed however a very kind man at the new cemetery site allowed me in to take photo's.
It was amazing to see the new site under construction.
I would love to share the photo's with you but they are too big to post on the forum, i am also a ludite with regards to uploading pics onto the web.
I am happy to PM individual pics or with someones help get them onto a photo sharing site.

Hi Tim,

Do you have a flickr account or another one with your internet service provider? I automatically have flickr one as part of my personal internet account with my provider, you may also have. If it is flickr I can "talk" you through the process (with a nod of thanks to forum pal Dragon for showing me how to do it in the first place). If it is another type then I am sure that more than one forum pal will be able to assist.

Alternatively, if you want to select a small sample of your favourites I'll gladly post them on your behalf if you send me a PM.

Best regards,

Ian.

Wow, this is a big job and well on target by the look of it. Thanks for the pics. I am really looking forward to visiting the site next year.

One wonders if the British planning process would have allowed such rapid progress.

Well done Alan and thanks for sharing them Tim!

Tim,

Excellent images, i think it is the scale that surprises me, I somehow never expected the area size to be so big.

Best regards,

Ian.

Ian.
It is a large site with only approx 25% of the oveall area taken up with the cemetery.
I could not get a look at a set of plans to see what space was allocated for a car park and landscaping, i am sure that the finished area will do those remembered in it proud.

Very impressive photographs.

Can you explain what the concrete piles are ??

Also the wooden framing that has been painted green - are these for new graves ???

Tony

Hi Tony.
Magicrat has kindly posted a link to the CWGC Fromelles project site (in the post above) it gives a much better description than i could give of the box shapes in the pictures however i believe that you are correct regarding the new graves, if you click on burial ground on the site there are pictures with detailed descriptions.
As for the concrete piles, i am afraid that i do not have a clue, at first i thought that they were supports for the individual rows of headstones but i am not sure.
Sorry that i could not be of any more help.
Thanks for your kind comments regarding the photo's.

Tim.

Great photos!

I was going to ask exactly the same question as Tony about the wooden frames being for the caskets.

This the explanation for the piling:

After a detailed analysis of the sub-soil it became apparent that it would not support the weight of this structure using traditional foundations. On the advice of the structural engineer twenty-six piles were installed, each of which is seven metres deep and has a bearing capacity of ten tonnes. Four of these piles support the Cross foundation, with the weight of the remainder of the structure being spread equally over the rest.

Excellent photos Tim, thanks for posting. I was there in the summer, and didn't see much. Certainly looks like a lot of work has been done since.

Cheers Mike

Hi Everyone,

Forum member Keith Miller asked me to post the below photograph that he took at the site of the cemetery on the 23rd of June - it's clear that a lot of work has been done in the last four months. Thanks Keith.
