In memory of William Grant, who served as Gunner 26965 with 5 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. William died this day 2nd November 1914, aged 39; he was the second fatality the Battery suffered since it arrived in France in the September.

William was the son of William and Mary Grant, and before joining the Royal Garrison Artillery as a regular before the war he lived at Eassie, near Glamis, Forfar. He now rests in Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck.

The epitaph on his grave is an interesting one, I would think chosen by his parents; it reads:

"Fighting to save a world's morality he died the noblest death a man may die"
