I would like to have a go, but again my lack of knowledge is a problem. I've been reading and searching, but can't find out enough detail to enable me to write with any confidence.
Can I ask a few questions. No particular order; just as they occur to me.

Was a Drill Sergeant just a D.S? (Is that what he did all day?)
Did he just do parade ground marching drill (with and without weapons) or did he also organise other activities such as kit inspections and the route marches etc etc.

Did he go abroad with the troops and if so what was his role during fighting?

Were they all very hard men? (Did they all shout "you 'orrible lot!") ?
Were some dug-outs?

Any pointers would be very gratefully received.
