Full Version: Divers pictures of wrecks (Cressy)

I have seen that it is possible to obtain a copy of the diving picture taken of the Cressy, which was torpedoed off Scheveningen on September 22 1914, along with the Aboukir and Hogue. My grandfather was lost at this time, and I would really like to know more about the location of the wrecks and the pictures obtained by divers.

Can't help with photos, I'm afraid, but the attachment shows the position of the three wrecks of Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy.

Today the three cruisers lie in about 80 feet of water, some 22 miles out from Scheveningen. The first to be torpedoed, H.M.S. Aboukir, stayed afloat for 25 minutes before capsizing and lay for some time with her keel above water. Her position today is 52° 15.30' N: 03° 41.34' E. H.M.S. Hogue was hit by torpedoes from both of U9’s bow tubes when she stopped to pick up survivors. The wreck lies at 52° 15.22' N: 03° 41.48' E, some 150 yards from H.M.S. Aboukir. H.M.S. Cressy was the last to go. The wreck is at 52° 15.20' N; 03° 40.82' E, about 800 yards from the others.
All three cruisers are almost upside-down, with severe damage to their bottoms. Though some of this can be put down to the torpedoes, there was heavy salvage in the 1950’s, with all the sterns blown off in recovering the propellers and shafts. Midship sections have been opened with explosives to reach the condensers and in the bows the torpedo tubes have been blown out. Showing are the powder and shell magazines and the bases of the engines and boilers. The bottoms of the lower 6in gun casemates on the port side of H.M.S. Cressy can be seen.

Welcome.

Here's a very basic map from Google Earth, using the coordinates provided by Northern Soul. The wrecks are located about 40 km off the Dutch coast. I tried getting in close enough to have the wreck locations show separately but then all you see is sea.

Martin - did you put in 3 degrees E or 2? The Lat/Long at the bottom right says 2 and to my eyes the position seems a bit too far west?

I should have said that I created that file some time ago when I was researching a couple of local men who died on the Cressy. The resource I used (and it is still partly accessible) is in the link below.

Wrecksite maps

As you hover the cursor over the maps the Lat/Long co-ordinates can be seen changing. Unfortunately you don't seem to be able to zoom in on a particular map to get fine detail any more. Subscription is 25 Euro/yr, although it has to be said that it is a superb resource for anyone interested in wrecks.

Best wishes.

Andy.

Andy.

I copied and pasted the coords you quoted directly into Google Earth. The only thing I changed was the semi-colon (to a comma) but it may have worked as is. The coord showing at bottom-left is probably that of the centre of the view, which I moved around a little. If it still seems incorrect, let me know and I'll take it down (can't see how it could be though, going on your coords).

Martin

p.s. I wonder if it's a bit of an optical illusion that it's more west, given that I put the label to the left?

No, you are correct - must be an optical illusion. I've had a look at the original chart and the position is correct (too big to post here unfortunately).
