A long time lurker wishing to say thanks for all the great info contained in this forum.
With the resources of this forum, my father, brother and I toured The Somme July 2009. In particular we saw the 5 Newfoundland Caribou monuments. Along with the one in St. John's , we have now seen all 6. We found finding the Belgium Caribou a bit hard for the self guided tourist, but the others were easy to find.
My grandfather survived July 1 Beaumont Hammel. But lost his arm in a later battle. He later went back to visit the Somme in the 60s and it apparently was filmed for an NFB movie and again in early 70s. We have not found any info on that. I know there are few Newfoundlanders on this forum – do you have any info?
Pte. R. Spencer #859, was hospitalized at 18th General Hospital Dannes Camiers France. I am trying to find any info on that hospital, but have come up empty. Does anyone have any information?
Our trip was a lifelong dream of my father to see where his father had fought. The Beaumont Hammel guides were most kind to the three of us when we informed them of our family connection to the area.Information gleaned from this form was very helpful.
Thank you.

Unfortunately not able to help with your queries...but just a warm welcome to the forum with your first post, and I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to the battlefields. I hope some of the other pals that spend their time hanging around this great meeting place will be able to help...
regards

Welcome to the forum. There are at least three "Newfoundlanders" on the forum that I know of (I live in St. John's, but I am originally a Mainlander so that might make in only 2 others).
I can't wait until I have the opportunity to see all the Caribou, only the one in St. John's so far.

Hi Crooket Beat
Welcome to the Forum.
Dannes-Camiers, just north of Etaples, on the Pas-de-Calais coast, was the site of 25 General Hospital from Aug 1915 - May 1916.
I suggest you try www.1914-1918.net (The Long, Long Trail) for further info on the RAMC casualty evacuation chain and medical establishements.
Cheers.
