Full Version: 2nd Lt Billy Bruce RE (TF), Att. 206 Field Company

Today is the 91st anniversary of the Battle of the Sambre. Following his actions in organising the building of one of the floating bridges, Lt* Billy Bruce was recommended for the MC which was duly gazetted.

I discovered yesterday at Kew that he had signed up in March 1914, and come up from the ranks, though I don't think he went overseas until after 1915 was over. But having served His Majesty's colours for four and a half years without so much as a scratch, he was killed clearing German ammunition on December 3rd 1918.

I knew about his death already, but I'll confess that I had a little well when I realised when he'd joined up.

PS Other famous things happened there that day.

*the LG and CWGC differ over his rank - I've not gone through the record yet to see why.

Billy Bruce, may you forever rest in peace.

So sad to have made it through it all and then to be killed during post war clearance.

Thank you

I think, according to the Long, Long Trail, that 206 Field Company was Glasgow. If you PM me (as this thread will eventually disappear), I'll let you know if I find any reference. I haven't started on his record uet as I've felt rough ever since I got back from Kew.
