Good Day All!
I just received a Victory Medal I purchased and would really appreciate help with identifying this person.
On the rim is the following "403741 1.A.M. F.G. Barlow. R.A.F."
I assumed when I acquired this medal that it would be a mere formality in identifying this airman, but was saddly mistaken. Because the R.A.F. was formed after April, 1918, this was possibly a late enlistee?
Is there any source of information I might possibly have access to to help identify this person and his unit? What does 1.A.M. mean? I am guessing Leading Aircraft Mechanic?
Thank-you very much.
Cheers
Bob

The airman’s number you quote is one of a number of men who were due to stay in the RAF after the end of the war and as such their AIR79 records are not available at the National Archives. He might have enlisted before the end of the war and been renumbered, try looking for his medal card and see if there is another number on it.

Thank's very much, John. At least a start!
If he didn't serve before the armistice, would he have been issued a Victory Medal?
Have already tried the Medal Cards. For me. it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, with his surname.
Thanks again.
Cheers

The online MICs are Army records, only a small fraction of members of the RFC or RAF are recorded on them. The RAF have yet to release their MICs.
The 400,000 series includes many who had served in the RFC (including overseas) and been renumbered.

1.A.M. 1st Class Airman
Not quite - Air Mechanic 1st Class - my Great Grandfathers brother was in the RFC/RAF from 1917 to his death in 1919. His CWGC listing has Air Mechanic 3rd Class as his rank, and his records show the same 3.A.M. abbreviation:

Leading Aircraft Mechanic?
This rank came in after the war.
