I am working on the period April May June 1915 following the activities of the 47th Division especially the 17th London Battalion. I would like to get a map relating to that time please if any one can suggest a link. I can find references to 1916 and 1918 but haven' found a specific reference to movements of units at that time. I have all the War Diaries, it would be useful to put the 2 together. Colin

Hi Colin
I know of two books that deal with the 1915 Battles of Givenchy and Festubert. Both contain excellant maps.
Unfortunately, from your prospective, they are both Canadian as these two battles very much involved the 1st Canadian Division.
They are :
For King and Empire: Other Canadian Battlefields of theGreat War - Norm Christie, 2007, Ottawa
Battle Royal, A History of the Royal Regiment of Canada (3rd.Toronto Battalion, CEF), Major D.J. Goodspeed, 1962, Toronto
Cheers

The 2nd Volume of the OH for 1915 has details of the battle of Festubert and some maps. Not very detailed but 47th Div is on at least one of them. The map volume for the series, presumably has better ones but I have not seen it.

Bob thank you I will see if either book is around, somebody may have a copy I doubt whether my library although excellent goes that far. Tom I will have a look at the OH is that the copy by Cyril Falls? I looked at it a couple of years ago I don't remember a map but I was less aware as it was earlier in my quest and I was unsure of what I needed to look for. Kind of you both to reply I will pursue further thanks Colin

Edmonds was the compiler of this volume with Becke credited for the maps. It is the volume which concentrates on Loos. It occurs to me that there are 3 books in the Battleground Europe series which may interest you. Aubers Ridge by Edward Hancock, Neuve Chapelle by Geoff Bridger and Fromelles by Peter Pedersen all deal with the area and Festubert is covered briefly in the Aubers Ridge book. Full of photographs and maps, I like these little books.

Just failed to give you a June 1915 map of Givenchy from Atkinson's History of the 7th Division. System only allows a file upload of 15.8k - it used to be 100k. I resized it several times as it was.
Mods what is going on?
