A letter in Today's Telegraph (6/11/09) complains about the condition of a war memorial at Baker Street tube station, but gives no other information:

Lest we forget

SIR – In Baker Street underground station, a fine marble war memorial is passed by thousands every day. It is now dirty and decrepit (Letters, November 4). A friendly Transport for London official told me that the cost of repair was unaffordable at £10,000. I told him I would polish the big brass shield, whose engraving is scarcely legible for filth. He said he would do it himself, in a week or so. Lest he forget, before Remembrance Sunday, I shall be there with my Brasso.

A search turned up this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mynameismisty/3364028830/ and this is the UKNIWM entry http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.3090 as the writer says it is, 'a fine marble war memorial' it would be a great shame if it were allowed to deteriorate.

I hope no-one gets too enthusiastic with brasso. I have seen a few memorials (especially bronze) spoiled by incorrect cleaning.

The War Memorials Trust can give advice on cleaning and conservation of memorials.

Well said

Looking at the picture this is going to need professional stone cleaning. As for the "brass" If over cleaned the inscription will be lost
