Thank you. I have checked Blumberg's "Britains Sea Soldiers', & I feel sure Saxton is a Gallipoli casualty,

Geoff,
Thank you. None of these are listed in SDGW as 'Gallipoli' casualties, but I believe Hughes, Selby, Jinks & Mitchell were, as their units were all on Gallipoli before & after their dates of death. I think, however, that the Wood brother is 'too late,'

I am researching the WW1 servicemen who appear on the War Memorial in Stubbington, Hampshire. There are 3 brothers who appear there, one of whom was killed at Gallipoli - details as follows:

2nd Lt William Augustine Harper Lowry, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, 14th king George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs. died aged 25 on 04/06/1915. Helles Memorial (He is described as of Indian nationality on the CWG site)

Lt.Col. Auriol Ernest Eric Lowry DSO, MC, Croix de Guerre avec Palme, 2nd Bn., West yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), died aged 25 on 23/09/1918. La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville - St. Vaast

Captain Cyril John Patrick Lowry, "C" Coy. 2nd Bn., West yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) died aged 20 on 25/03/1918. Pozieres Memorial.

Hope this may be of interest - I am new to the site, just found it, so am looking forward to gathering more info soon.

Major Frank Statham and Corporal Clive Statham

I came across this reference in course of some research which forum members may be interested in:

“BROTHERS DIE TOGETHER

KILLED BY ONE SHELL

There appears to be little doubt that Major Frank Statham and Corporal Clive Statham of Dunedin, were killed in action. Writing from the trenches to Mr C H Statham, Lieutenant L G Wilson, adjutant of the Otago Battalion, 10th North Otago Regiment, to which both Mr Statham’s sons were attached, says: “The battalion was almost decimated, and the only information we could get was one man’s statement that he had seen the major wounded and in an unconscious state early in the afternoon. After that he had not seen him. Now, however, three men who were wounded state that the major and Clive were standing together and were killed by the explosion of one shell, which landed very close to them. Beyond that I regret that I have been unable to gain any more details. It has been a terrible business and a loss that will never be fully realised. The major, as an officer among officers, was placed on the highest pedestal of respect and admiration, by the men was loved, and was a born leader. In every operation in which our battalion was engaged it was the major and his company who led the offensive.”

Charles Bean in his book the Story of Anzac Vol 2 (page 580 / 692) also refers to these two brothers being killed on Chunuk Bair on 9 August 1915. Bean makes the following statement:

“About 5 am, while the Turkish attack upon them was still at its height, three high explosive howitzer shells, coming from the right rear, burst among them, one exploding in the front trench, and killing the gallant Major Statham (accountant; of St Leonard’s Otago NZ; b Dunedin NZ 31 Dec 1879) together with his brother beside him, (sheep farmer; of Takapau, Hawkes Bay NZ; b Dunedin, NZ, 23 Sept 1892) as well as Sergeant-Major Porteous (MID Member of NZ Permanent Forces, of Oamaru and Dunedin NZ; b Dunedin 23 July 1875) and six of seven men. The shells almost certainly came from one of the howitzer batteries inside the old Anzac lines.”

Richard Stowers also refers to the brothers in his 2005 book Bloody Gallipoli The New Zealanders’ Story – pages 188 / 362. Stowers refers to Colonel Meldrum (Wellington Mounted Rifles) who was there at the time as being “convinced that Statham was killed by a Royal Navy shell.” I don’t think anyone will know for certain.

Anyone looking for photos of the two brothers can find them in The Auckland Weekly News Nov 4, 1915 page 30- centre of the page.

DAVID Shapcott
My Grandfather, Alexander Shapcott, died that very same month on that very same Turkish peninsula. His name is on the Hellas War Memorial, a 30m-high obelisk that can still be seen by ships passing through the Dardanelles. He was a Private in his 20s. Just eight weeks before he'd lost his brother William, a drummer boy and my Uncle - yet another one of 20,000 soldiers who died in that notorious and savage campaign. Both served in the East Lancashire Regiment.

David & Michael,
Thank you both very much. To my surprise ( only in the fact that the names keep coming in) these two lads are new to me. But another dreadful story, isn't it. How parents coped? Or didn't, there seem to be a lot of casualties where the family details for one brother differ from the other(s) in the fact that the word 'late' appears by one of the parents, usually after the first one's death,

Hi Bob,

I'm trying to help a work colleague who is trying to trace his relatives. His aunt told him that four of her brothers were killed. Their surname is Reilly or Riley. I have managed to identify only one;
Edward Riley Pvt 10432 6th Batt. South Lancashire Regiment. Edward was killed on 10/8/1915 at Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Helles memorial. Son of Patrick, 20 Union Street, St Helens.
His other brothers were John, Joseph and Lawrence Reilly/Riley. The family were all from St. Helens area.
Many of the posts ask how the parents and other family members coped. In this instance it was never spoken about. According to my colleague, the only sign anything had happened was that every Armistice Day, his grandmother would sit at home and weep. My eyes cant help leaking as I think of that poor woman whose only defense to the unbearable grief of losing four sons was to try and blot it out until 11 November every year. If you or any of the other Pals know anything that would help I would love to tell my colleague to save them from being forgotten completely. I cant find anything conclusive on SDGW or CWGC but could that be because the family didnt return the finalistion forms? Grief is a terrible thing.

Keith
bobpike
Keith,
Many thanks for posting this, it is indeed tragic, but not unique, sadly. Annoyingly I have no record of these, but I would very much like to add them to my database. Browsing SDGW & CWGC, I suspect that Gnr. Lawrence (5352) is a good bet, but there is no concrete proof. As to John & Joseph, putting in St. Helens on the SDGW brings up one possibility for Joseph (12591 South Lancs) but there are family details on CWGC which dismiss him completely. There are two Johns, but there are no family details for either!
May I suggest you post your query elsewhere on the Forum and pick the brains of the many experts here, but PLEASE keep me informed,
Bob

My apologies for the delay in replying and thanking you all was necessitated by a week in France and on my return a computer crash!
All information is most appreciated, but the Meloy/Melloy question remains!

Hi there, Bob,

I think I've found two brothers for you whilst researching into the death of another man.

Robert H. Jones of the 7th RWF was killed by a shell on Lala Baba hill on December 8th 1915. Hit by the same shell was Thomas Evan Roberts (2602) of the same regiment. I'm unsure as to the specifics of Roberts's death, but Jones was killed when a pellet went through his lungs. Both men were buried in the same hole that night.

Roberts had earlier lost a brother at Suvla Bay (I think) on 10 August 1915. His name was David and his regimental number was 2600. The brothers were natives of Abergynolwyn, which is a pretty little village not far from the south-western corner of the old Merionethshire. Their parents renamed their home Suvla House to honour their sons.

I hope this isn't too late for your collection.

Trebrys.

May I put this back to the top, please, I'm particularly lacking in UK brothers so any more would be very welcome, thank-you,

Hello

I have just discovered details of my Grandfather's 3 cousins, all 3 brothers died in the War, one at Gallipoli.

I have just posted on another 'Brothers' forum thread, and also emailed re the site's Brothers database, so forgive me if I just copy the following.

With many thanks for the opportunity to commemorate these men:-

Honoured to add in the following, my Grandfather's cousins; from a chance remark I have just found out about this, a further, similar and sad tale; early days in my research but I believe these were the only children and therefore the family's line was to end with their deaths.

Details from CWGC; have been looking at other posts, I assume the 'additional information' is most likely to be from relatives, and given at the time?

(I would of course like to find there are other living relatives whose research resulted in the addition; but I think I am the first to 'remember' these 3 in a long time and am feeling very attached to them, you all know how it gets to you...)

With best wishes for your Project, I look forward to reading more.

Hi Bob,
What a dreadfully sad thread as you read through it in one sitting like I have just done - this one is just for interest and doesn't qualify for your research.
Doing my own research on Old Boys at my school (Harper and Lukin brothers there) and finally tracked Malcolm St Aiden Teasdale Smith killed at Gallipoli, and this morning discovered (thanks to Sue, Esskay) that he had a younger brother killed in WW2, Capt 2Bt. East Yorkshire Regiment). Their mother was living in Suffolk at the time of his death. As a mother, you think "I have to go through this all over again". Awful.
Brilliant work you are doing
Cheers

Shirley,
Thank you for the details which are indeed most sad, and for your kind words,

Highland,
Thank you too for the Vickers brothers, I did have them but it is good to remember them again,

Although this project can never close and really reach a finite list, and because the numbers are staggering it was decided to publish it in full on the web-site of the Gallipoli Association and you can find it at -

http://gallipoli-association.org/default.as

In addition as I shall continue to keep it updated if anyone would like a copy in full for themselves, please send me your e-mail address,
Bob

Re my last posting, the Gallipoli Association should read -

Mea culpa! (Thanks, Geoff!)
