Any body got any good web links to WW1 acty in the Sierra Leone area?

There was no fighting in Sierra Leone but local African men recruited there served with the British West African units in the brief 1914 conflicts in the German African colonies of Togoland and Cameroun - and also in the longer East African campaign. Their officers were usually Europeans - often UK or Indian Army on attachment.

Those that have no known grave have their name engraved on the Freetown Memorial. It is CWGC's practice to record the missing from the British West African territories on memorials in their home country regardless of where they died including officers attached to those units. Hence there are similar memorials in Lagos (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana) and Banjul (Gambia).

Today's 'Remembering' casualty was a British officer attached to the West African Regiment.

Freetown , in addition to what Terry has posted, was a significant coaling and supply port. Being halfway to South Africa it saw many troop ships mainly those returning from GEA and South Africa. It also nprovided hospital facilities for those too ill to continue the voyage back to the UK
